Exterior
1. Construction
In common with all members of the ETAP family, the ETAP 21i has ETAP’s unique double-skinned structure. This makes it unsinkable, provides extra hull stiffness, insulates hull and deck to ensure practically condensation-free cabins and gives a unique interior finish. The ETAP 21i is certified unsinkable by the French Merchant Marine, the only official body in the world authorized to issue certificates of unsinkability for sailing yachts. The ETAP 21i meets all appropriate EC standards and is approved to CE design classifications B (option) and C. The ETAP 21i is a comfortable, fast cabin sailing yacht with an exceptionally long waterline ( 20’0”) and a total sail area of 23.9 m² (257 sq.ft.). Easily towed on a trailer, the ETAP 21i is easy to launch without any special equipment.
2. Hull
The hull is built of fibreglass-reinforced polyester (ortho and iso) with a protective iso-NPG coating to give a totally waterproof finish. The first layer of laminate is made up of short separate glass fibres (roving), with no chopped strand mats or wovens. This layer is applied entirely by hand to provide optimum protection against osmosis. The unique ETAP double hull construction creates a number of unique benefits, including:
a high-stability floor structure in the interior hull ensures a very stiff hull construction
the floor panels can be recessed between the floor supports, producing a highly attractive finish
the protective iso-NPG gelcoat gives the polyester surface a durable, easy-maintenance finish
using a separate mast heel (not a through-deck mast) allows the mast base to be integrated into the deck structure.
Polyurethane foam with a minimum 95% closed cells is injected into the space between the two hulls, providing sufficient buoyancy to ensure that the boat will stay afloat even if it suffers serious damage. Substantial volumes of polyurethane foam are located fore and aft to provide impact protection and longitudinal stability in the event of damage. All the reinforcing and mounting plates in the hull and deck are made of aluminium or stainless steel.
3. Deck
The deck is also double-skinned, giving a very high standard of interior finish and eliminating the need for additional decorating materials, many of which might not be waterproof. The deck is entirely made using the closed mould method. RTM injection technology produces a monolithic structure which is technically superior to traditional manufacturing methods. Highly effective nonslip deck pads are fitted to the deck surface, with each nonslip area protected by a raised bumper. Aluminium toe rails are fitted over the entire length of the deck to provide better support. These also allow fenders to be attached without burdening the sea rail and act as fastening points for mooring ropes and lifelines. Four mooring cleats are fitted, plus a 45 cm-high plastic-coated stainless steel sea rail. The midships stanchions are fitted with padeyes to serve as securing points for stays when stepping and striking the mast, allowing the mast to be supported abeam. The stainless steel open pulpit and split pushpit facilitate boarding and disembarkation. The deck construction is designed to allow crew members to walk right round on the nonslip pad surface when the boat is heeling, while remaining fully protected by the sea rail. A polyester sliding hatch and a round acrylic outward-opening hatch are fitted to provide ventilation and light. Other deck fittings are as follows:
2 winches with 2 winch handles on the cockpit roof for halyards and clews
a mast heel for the steppable mast, with turning blocks and a retaining fitting to secure the mast for transport
turning blocks to allow running rigging to be controlled from the cockpit
2 genoa rails with track
4 mooring cleats
6 halyard clutches
1 flagpole and holder
3 folding padeyes to attach the mainsheet block.
The laminate is reinforced or has aluminium reinforcing plates fixed at locations where deck fittings are installed or may be installed as options
4. Deck to hull
The tension in the standing rigging is taken up by stainless steel tie rods on shroud plates in the hull. The unique ETAP External Chainplate System (ECS) -an innovative system with the shroud plates mounted as far outside as possible - reduces forces on the mast and hull by up to 30%. The deck is first fixed to the hull mechanically, then bonded to form a whole with it using reinforced polyester resin. Finally, an aluminium rubbing strake is attached to give mechanical protection.
5. Cockpit
The ETAP 21i has a very spacious and ergonomically-designed self-draining cockpit. A nonslip structure is incorporated into the gel coating of the hull floor for ease of cleaning. Safe and convenient stowage for the fuel tank is provided in the hull floor. Capacious cockpit stowage lockers are located to both port and starboard. Facilities for mounting an engine block are provided in the stern to allow an outboard engine to be fitted amidships if desired. A stainless steel bathing ladder and a manual bilge pump are also fitted.
6. Rigging
The ETAP 21i has an ETAP mast with one set of aerofoil spreaders and 7/8 rigging. A spinnaker boom ring is fitted as standard. The mast is attached to an on-deck mast heel (not stepped through) to ensure that the structure is watertight and easily stepped. All standing rigging is made from 4 mm stainless steel wire (with the exception of the backstay, for which 3 mm stainless steel wire is used) with rolled cotter terminals and bottlescrews on deck. The forestay has an adjustable quick-release bottlescrew. The boom is fitted with an outhaul and 2 reefing lines. The reefing lines run over turning blocks on the luff and leech of the mainsail, thus reducing friction to a minimum and allowing all reefing manoeuvres to be carried out from the cockpit without needing a gooseneck on the front of the boom. The boom is fitted with a boom downhaul and supported by a fixed rod kicker to prevent it from striking the deck or sprayhood during reefing. The mainsail and jib halyards have snap fastenings for easy sail attachment, and a pennant is mounted on the masthead.
7. Sails
The ETAP 21i has a partially battened mainsail with a free foot, made by internationally renowned sail makers. The mainsail area is 15.5 m² (167 sq.ft.), with two sets of reefing points and a rounded leech. The two upper battens extend from leech to luff for ideal shape stability, while the two lower battens are shorter in order to avoid placing too high a pressure on the cringles (eyelets) and to facilitate hoisting and reefing the sail. The jib is an 8.4 m² (91 sq.ft.) 115% genoa, designed and rigged to overlap the mainsail sufficiently to ensure optimum performance. The mainsail carries the ETAP logo, both sails are fitted with tell-tales and leech tensioners, and all sails are supplied with a sail bag.
8. Water
A rigid, portable water tank composed of 2 x 10-litre jerrycans is located in the front cabin, with a pump handle to supply water to the washbasin.
9. Keel
The ETAP 21i has a cast iron fin-and-bulb keel. The bulb at the base of the keel lowers the centre of gravity, while its hydrodynamic shape acts like a wing and generates extra lift. Draught is 1.30 m (4’3”) with the standard keel or 0.70 m (2’31/2”) with the optional ETAP tandem keel. The keel is mounted in an integral keel housing which forms part of the external and internal hulls. It is bolted on in the traditional manner, with stainless steel mounting plates fitted in the hull.
10. Rudder
Two rudders ensure highly efficient operation. The rudder blades are made by a closed mould technique which winds fibreglass around a polyurethane core. This monolithic structure ensures greater shock resistance than traditional manufacturing methods. The highly sophisticated technical solution used to connect the tiller to the rudders allows the resistance and angle of each rudder to be adjusted independently. Lifting rudders are available in option in order to make the launch from the trailer more comfortable.
11. Skin Fittings
The skin fittings have fast-closing ball valves, and reinforced hoses are attached with double stainless steel hose clamps. Hulls can be supplied without skin fittings on request.
Interior
1. General
The stylish interior of the ETAP 21i is finished in marine ply, coated on both sides with a maintenance-free pear laminate. Floorboards are removable to allow easy access for inspection of the keel bolts and measuring equipment. The companionway has a foldaway tread with a nonslip pad. Access is via a polyester sliding hatch and transparent plexiglass washboards.
2. Salon
The salon contains two long sofas (each 2.00 m x 0.60 m) which can be used as berths. The cushion covers are removable for cleaning, and are protected by a decorative strip; no velcro-type fastenings are used. Two stowage lockers, complete with hinged covers, are located under each sofa, while open stowage space is provided behind the backrests. The pear laminate salon table stands on a removable leg; when not in use in the salon, it can be stowed under the cockpit or even mounted and used in the cockpit.
3. Galley
A 2-burner spirit hob is mounted on the solid galley unit, with a PVC sink and pump handle. The pump handle is connected to the portable water tank (composed of 2 x 10-litre jerrycans) located in the front cabin. The galley unit contains ample stowage space.
4. Forepeak
The open forepeak forms a very spacious double berth, with a built-in plinth for mounting an optional sea or chemical toilet. If desired, the front cabin space can be closed off with an optional roller blind. Ample stowage space is provided under the berth.
Options
A full list of options for the ETAP 21i, with current prices and/or additional technical documentation, is available on request from your ETAP dealer. Some of the main options are :
1. Mainsheet rail
A mainsheet rail can be installed in the cockpit for even better mainsail trimming. The rail allows continuous adjustment of the mainsheet block position. Two extendable bolts with quick-release nuts allow the rail to be dismantled easily without requiring any tools. The rail can be stored in the cockpit stowage locker..
2. Bowsprit
A bowsprit can be fitted to serve as an attachment point for the asymmetrical spinnaker control line. It can also be used as a convenient footboard for boarding and disembarkation, and as an anchor chain guide.
3. Electrical equipment
The ETAP 21i can be supplied with a 55 Amp-hour maintenance-free battery to power the three-colour mast light and the interior lighting. The control panel and circuit breakers are mounted internally to starboard.
4. ETAP tandem keel
The ETAP tandem keel is a new type of keel developed by ETAP Yachting to deliver improved performance with reduced draft. The system involves mounting two short keels in tandem at an optimum distance apart, connected by a wing-bulb section. The ETAP tandem keel gives a better aspect ratio, generating greater lift. In addition to increased stability, the wing-bulb also provides better hydrodynamic characteristics. ETAP tandem keels give practically the same performance as conventional shallow keels while reducing the draught significantly, as demonstrated by numerous independent tests. With the tandem keel, the ETAP 21i has a draught of 0.70 m.
5. Outboard engine
Mounting an engine block allows most popular outboard engines to be fitted to the ETAP 21i. Mounting the engine amidships eliminates the need to use the rudder to compensate against the push of the engine when cruising under power. The mounting allows the engine to be tipped to lift the propeller out of the water while under sail. Separate stowage space is provided under the cockpit floor for the petrol tank.
6. Trailer
Special trailers have been designed in close cooperation with a number of renowned trailer manufacturers. When fitted with the 0.70 m ETAP tandem keel, the ETAP 21i can be launched straight from the trailer. For further details, please consult your ETAP dealer.
